Gateway Design Studio was selected in the Spring of 2020 to provide conceptual design documents for the renovation of the main playground site located at Watson Trail Park in Sunset Hills, MO.  The purpose of the project was for concept design development and cost estimates related to future funding and grant application opportunities associated with the playground improvements.

 

GDS subsequently provided preliminary and final design documents for the renovation of the playground site. Additional services included providing bidding and construction administration services. Plans were developed related to recent grant funding associated with the proposed playground improvements. An overall project budget of approximately $415,000.00 was determined.

 

The site currently has a 50th anniversary play structure that was built prior to renovations which also remains. A special area is designated for ADA and children with disabilities which is part of a separate donor project that features a special wheelchair "glider" area and zero edge Mary-go-Round. This area was incorporated into the overall design of the new playground area.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS

As part of the planning stages NuToys/Landscape Structures collaborated with GDS on play equipment selection and colors. The design plans were to depict the playground equipment location, surfacing, landscaping, seating and sidewalks connections and pavement areas. Runoff and drainage was mitigated as necessary to provide positive drainage through a rain garden.

Phase 1 of the project was completed in the Summer of 2021.
