Heart of Pine Lawn Project Clear Streetscape Redevelopment
Pine Lawn, MO
Gateway Design Studio teamed with a local engineering firm on this project to provide design and engineering services for Beyond Housing (a local non-for-profit organization) as part of an application to the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District for a storm water mitigation project in North County St. Louis, MO.

Old Garfield Elementary School located at Pasadena Blvd. and Oxford Road in Pine Lawn was vacant and renovated to be the new headquarters for Beyond Housing. In an effort to procure funds, Beyond Housing desired to transform the site which was predominately asphalt and concrete to more green space; incorporating more sustainable green storm water measures such as impervious area reduction, porous pavement, bio-retention/rain gardens, rooftop disconnection rain barrels and other techniques as approved by MSD.

Design recommendations were provided by GDS for both the school property and Pasadena Blvd. pertaining to green space area layout, planned areas for bio-retention/rain gardens and native landscape development. The objective is to reduce pavement areas and convert sections of roadway to landscape medians and planter areas.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The overall landscape design objective for this project was to create a sustainable, clean and impressive landscape image within the City. Special attention was given to plant material which would produce seasonal color, compact growth and be salt and pollution tolerant. Seasonal flowers and perennials are featured at the ends and middle of the medians in order to create accent color and attention to intersections.
