West Legion Park
Sikeston, Missouri

Conceptual Design Plans and feasibility for proposed expansion improvements to the City owned western property adjacent to the existing Legion Park to the east. The park hosts several large community events, including the St. Patrick’s Day Festival, the Parks and Recreation Cornhole Tournament, Farmer’s Market, Christmas Tree Lighting, and the Family Fall Festival. A final Preferred Concept Plan was developed, presented, and endorsed by the City Council in June 2022.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Gateway Design Studio proposed improvements related to conversion of existing pavement areas to greenspace, a Farmers Market Pavilion, a restroom building, dedicated areas for Cornhole Tournament,  parking and utilities for food trucks, potential area for a future playground and additional sidewalks with landscaping. The concept study further explored the possibility to close off a section of New Madrid Street to consolidate the West parcel to the existing Legion Park property to the east. This plan maximizes green space for events and gives the Sikeston an opportunity to take advantage of promoting Downtown revitalization which is key to the City’s economic development.
